A kimono day in Asakusa is one of the nicest things a family can do together in Tokyo. The children love dressing up, the grandparents love the photos, and the temple is right there. But with kids, the practical questions come first: will they keep it on, how long does it take, and what happens when someone gets tired?
We are a kimono studio on the 4th floor of the Amoru Building, about one minute from Sensoji Temple, and we have been dressing and photographing families for years. This guide answers the questions parents ask us most.
Quick answer: children’s kimono start from about 8 months old. Kids and dads are dressed in 5 to 10 minutes. The shop has an elevator and two floors of space for strollers and luggage. And for photoshoots of 4 people or more, the price stays the same however big your group is.
Why Asakusa works well for families
- One minute to Sensoji. Children do not have to walk far in kimono before the photos start, and it is easy to come back if someone needs a break.
- An elevator, not stairs. You can bring a stroller or a wheelchair straight up to the shop. Our elevator goes to both the 3rd and 4th floors.
- Two floors of space. There is room for the whole family to change without squeezing into one small room, and space to leave strollers, wheelchairs and luggage while you are out.
- A toilet on each floor. Useful with small children, especially just before you head out in kimono.

Kimono for children, mum and dad
Everyone picks their own kimono. Children’s kimono are priced by height, so the price depends on the size your child needs.
| Who | From | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Children (from about 8 months) | ¥4,000–¥5,000 | Priced by height |
| Men | ¥7,000 | Includes a haori jacket |
| Women | ¥5,000 basic / ¥7,000 traditional / ¥10,000 furisode | Hairstyling included; makeup +¥5,000 |
Prices are cash prices; card prices are slightly higher. See the full list on our kimono rental prices page, or read what a furisode is if you are not sure which style to choose.

How long it takes to dress the whole family
- Children: about 5 to 10 minutes.
- Men: about 5 to 10 minutes.
- Women: about 30 minutes for kimono and hair, plus about 30 minutes for makeup if you add it.
Our tip: mum goes first, and the children are dressed last. That way the kids are not waiting around in kimono getting tired before the photos even start.
Shoes for small children: wear sneakers
Traditional kimono sandals are hard to walk in and can hurt small feet. For young children we recommend keeping their own sneakers on. They walk, run and play more easily, and in most photos you will hardly see the shoes.

Family photoshoot: one price from 4 people
This is the part families like most. With many photographers, every extra person costs extra. With us, the photoshoot price for 4 people or more is the same, whether you are 4, 10 or 20 people.
| Group size | Original photos | With edited photos |
|---|---|---|
| 3 people | ¥18,000 (100–150 files) | ¥25,000 (25 edited + 150–200 files) |
| 4 people or more | ¥21,000 (100–150 files) | ¥28,000 (30 edited + 150–250 files) |
- Every session is 60 minutes around Sensoji. With a big family, plan together who is photographed first: everyone together, then each family, then the children.
- Want more time? You can add 30 or 60 minutes.
- Photoshoot prices are cash only. Kimono rental is paid separately.
Our photographers have photographed families for years. They know how to get children to relax, when to pose and when to simply catch the moment. See all photoshoot packages, or the couple kimono experience if it is just the two of you.
